September, 2006The basic philosophy. The philosophy of the Hare Krishna movement is based on a set of scriptures known as the "Veda" (knowledge). The revealed scriptures are vast and old, they date back to 3000 BC The religious tradition commonly called Hinduism is largely based on the Vedas. The Vedas consisted of several documents, among which are the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam, which represents the founding of the Hare Krishna philosophy. There are two principles on the Hare Krishna philosophy that express the practice of vegetarianism. These two principles are: 1) Non-Violence 2) service to the Lord (Krishna). Nonviolence means not to interrupt the material or spiritual evolution of every living being. According to the law of karma and reincarnation if an animal is killed before the end of time he has been assigned by nature, then it must be born again in the same kind of body to complete his remaining days to finally be promoted Ascending to the next space. Therefore, the slaughter of animals just to satisfy the demands of the palace is an act of violence and spiritual material. As for the service of God, the Bhagavad-gita informs us, I was offered, with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit, water, and this offering, I will accept it (Bhagavad-gita 9.26). Before eating any food at all the devotees of Krishna perform a ceremony during which they offer food to God. This act sanctifies religious preparations and frees the person who eats (of any Karma). Krishna explains in the Bhagavad gita that accepts only vegetarian food offered to himself. That is why Krishna devotees are vegetarian. They do this for the sake of service to please the Lord Krishna.
