Thalassa research vessel pelagic

cliche DR

Planned in 1953 to replace former President Theodore Tissier (launched in 1933), Thalassa is the first research vessel specifically equipped for fishing back. It is, at the time, qualified as revolutionary, and some of its equipment (such stern ramp and the covered bridge) are, in fact, real news for a vessel of this type. It is equipped with sophisticated equipment that allow scientists to conduct, among other marking and delivery to the sea of living species with a fish pond.

The ship is put on hold August 25, 1959, launched 12 May 1960 by Chantiers Augustin Normand for Scientific and Technical Institute of Marine Fisheries (ISTPM) and delivered 10 November 1960. He completed his first season as December. In 1984 he was transferred to the French Institute for Research and Exploitation of the Sea (IFREMER). In 1995, he became Thalassa I when its replacement by a new vessel, Thalassa II, built in Dieppe. It is then laid up in St. Nazaire and its transformation into a floating museum in Lorient is decided. He joins the fleet of vessels preserved in France, having the distinction of being all from Havre (Le Havre II, Swordfish , I France).
